Internationally Leading the Way in Vision Care

The University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary has been known by many names over the years, but throughout the 150 year history, the names have always been associated with the best care possible for treating and preventing eye diseases and preserving sight. Consistently ranked among the best hospitals for eyes by U.S. News & World Report, the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary offers vision services for patients of all ages. From common eye problems to rare, blinding diseases, our patients are treated by highly skilled vision care specialists.

Macular Degeneration

Age related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States and many European countries. The Vitreoretinal Service at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary sees patients with vitreoretinal disorders such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment, retinopathy of prematurity, intraocular tumors, severe eye trauma, and ocular complication of diabetes or sickle cell disease. The Vitreoretinal Service doctors specialize in laser treatment of the retina, retinal detachment surgery, and vitreous microsurgery.

Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are extremely common among Americans age 65 and older. Cataracts form when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy and cause blurred, dulled vision in the affected eye, which cannot be corrected by wearing stronger glasses or contact lenses. The Cornea Service at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary sees patients with corneal infections, keratoconus, cataracts, blepharitis, dry eyes, eyelid and conjunctival problems, tumors of the front portion of the eye and many other disorders.

Dry Eye

Dry Eye is a common condition that occurs when the surface of the eyes lacks the correct amount of tears to lubricate the eyes and keep them comfortable. The Cornea Service at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary sees patients with corneal infections, keratoconus, cataracts, blepharitis, dry eyes, eyelid and conjunctival problems, tumors of the front portion of the eye and many other disorders.
